HOPE in a Secret

Have you ever read a book that was potentially life changing and then settle back into your daily routine only to discover that SAME book ten years later and want to smack yourself for forgetting it? Yes, I am raising my hand (both hands) right now as I am kicking myself! Ok… I will give myself a break as I reflect on one of my favorite Bible verses from Romans (8:28): ALL things work together for good to those who love God. God knew I was going to need The Secret book ten years later, not only for myself, but for my son.

If you have been following my stories, you know by now that my son, Hunter, is a baller. He has goals of playing baseball in college. He eats, sleeps, and breathes baseball. This spring, he tried out for his school’s varsity team and… wait for it… did not make it. He was devastated… to put it mildly. There were times we had to talk him off the ledge literally. There were nights I lost sleep worrying about his mental health. To make matters worse, he had to endure bullying at school each and every day after he didn’t make the varsity team. Bullying from kids across all walks of life: athletes and gamers, honor students and those who struggle in school. TRUST me, if you think your child doesn’t have the ability to bully someone, they do. Gang mentality runs rampant in high school and Hunter experienced it at least one hundred times over. It was beyond brutal and the only thing that kept Hunter returning to school each day was his faith and the secret.

Experiencing this trial with my son caused me to access every resource at my disposal. That is when I rediscovered The Secret. We watched the documentary version of this book the same evening of my rediscovery and found the Dare to Dream version of this book a few weeks later. In between movies, Hunter read the book and ate up every chapter, along with myself. We would discuss the concepts after each chapter and started applying them in our daily lives. The epiphany we both experienced connected us on a new level, while transforming our thoughts. I vow to not rediscover this book ten years from this moment as I reread a chapter every week or so. It is now a part of my daily routine and way of life. Here are a few of the concepts of The Secret:

  • The law of attraction, like attracts like, is The Great Secret of Life where thoughts are magnetic and have a frequency. Every thought you send into the Universe attracts like things that share the same frequency and returns to the source, which is you.

  • If you want to change anything in your life, change your thoughts by focusing on what you want, not what you DON’T want; knowing there is an abundance of all things.

  • Your thoughts become things just by asking for, believing in, and receiving things.

  • To know what you are thinking, ask yourself how you are feeling because your thoughts determine your frequency and your feelings tell you what frequency you are on. It is impossible to feel bad and have good thoughts at the same time.

  • Love is the greatest frequency you can emit and the greater the love you feel, the greater power you are harnessing.

The author of this book is very strategic about teaching the secret while balancing religion and science in order to speak to her readers regardless of their faith. I, on the other hand, know that The Secret is based on Biblical principles. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”. “Life” includes physical, intellectual, and spiritual aspects. After my secret rediscovery, I now have a post-it note on my computer that reads: I am ABUNDANTLY healthy, wealthy, and wise. I LOVE this abundant concept because it not only puts an abundance of positive thoughts into the Universe, but it also eliminates the need for jealousy. Why, you ask… because with an abundance of everything, you don’t have to worry about someone else getting something you want. There is an unlimited abundance of what you want and for everyone who wants the same thing.

The Secret also teaches that if you ask it and believe that you will receive it, you will have it. Well, the Bible shares this same idea in several verses. Some of my favorites are from the Books of Matthew, Mark, and John. Matthew 7:7-8 says: 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened”. Mark 11:24 reiterates this sentiment: “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you will have them.” And… Jesus says in John 16:24: “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” This verse combines the concept of asking and receiving with abundant living… it is a two-fer!

I know what you are thinking… this is all hogwash! However, nothing could be further from the truth. Hunter and I have been supporting each other by applying the secret in everything we say and do since my rediscovery of this book. When we catch each other saying negative things or having negative emotions, we remind each other that thoughts and feelings bring things… negative attracts negative and positive attracts positive. It helps to have a secret partner in this journey because human nature usually defers to the negative. If negative thinking is a habit, you need a support network to change your thought frequency from worrying about things you DON’T want to thinking of things you DO want.

While he and I are both in the primary stages of this law of attraction journey, I will tell you that we have witnessed and experienced an array of positive results. One of my first experiences involved going to the mailbox and instead of worrying about bills, I asked for a check. No lie… I received a $100 check from a relative in celebration of our vow renewal that same day. I just about fell over running to the house to show Hunter! About two months later, I did the same thing and… a $500 check was in the mail for property tax relief. Crazy, but true. However, one of the most rewarding experiences so far was when Hunter was called up to play on the varsity team… and his very first varsity game was on his 16th birthday. We couldn’t have written a better story if we tried. God’s timing, God’s plan.

Because of our faith, we know God has his hand in this journey and it was His will for us to experience the secret together. We are living an abundant life due to our change in thinking… not because we went out and bought a bunch of self-help books or paid co-pays for therapy… nope. I am grateful for this journey and that I am experiencing it with my son who has discovered the law of attraction before going to college. We are beyond blessed in more ways than we could ever imagine… all because of God, a book we already owned, and our faith in knowing He works ALL things for good. It doesn’t get much better than having HOPE in a secret.
